Where to Stay in South Tyrol in Winter

In winter, South Tyrol transforms into one of Europe’s premier ski destinations. Visitors can ski the vast Dolomiti Superski network or discover South Tyrol’s quieter, lesser-known ski resorts like Ratschings-Jaufen, Rosskopf, Schöneben, and Sulden am Ortler. 

Travelers can also explore snow-covered landscapes on snowshoes, enjoy world-class cross-country skiing, and savor delicious mountain cuisine in the region’s gourmet mountain huts.

Here’s where I recommend staying in South Tyrol in winter based on your priorities.

Dolomites 

When it comes to scenery, atmosphere, mountain cuisine, unforgettable ski circuits like the Sella Ronda, and outstanding ski hotels, it’s hard to surpass the Dolomites. Few ski destinations combine world-class terrain with such spectacular landscapes and distinctive regional culture.

However, timing your trip is essential. The Christmas holidays and February are the busiest, and most expensive, times to visit. For the best value and fewer crowds, I recommend skiing in early to mid-December or throughout March.

For beginners, Seiser Alm (Alpe di Siusi), which forms part of the Val Gardena ski area, is the ideal choice. Its wide, gentle pistes and abundance of ski-in/ski-out accommodations make it one of the best places in the Alps to learn and build confidence. Excellent options include 5-star ADLER Alpe, 4-star ICARO hotel, or 4-star Hotel Goldknopf. In addition to alpine skiing, Seiser Alm is a celebrated destination for cross-country skiing and winter hiking.

For casual skiers and self-proclaimed foodies, Alta Badia is my top recommendation. The skiing is relaxed, the hotels are among the finest in the Alps, and the region has become synonymous with exceptional alpine cuisine. Base yourself in a ski-in ski-out hotel in Corvara for the most convenience: B&B La Tranquillitè, adults-only Hotel Arkadia, Berghotel Ladinia, Hotel La Perla, or Hotel Posta Zirm (here’s my review of Hotel Posta Zirm).

Intermediate and advanced skiers can easily venture beyond Alta Badia to neighboring Arabba and Val Gardena, while a short shuttle ride to Passo Falzarego opens up access to the Cortina d’Ampezzo ski resort.

For stronger intermediate and advanced skiers, Val Gardena offers one of the Dolomites’ most extensive and rewarding ski experiences, along with some of the liveliest and most atmospheric mountain huts in the region. The village of Selva di Val Gardena is the best base in the valley for skiing: Hotel Continental Dolomites (4-star ski-in ski-out), Stella Hotel (4-star on the Sella Ronda orange route), Freina Mountain Lifestyle Hotel (4-star ski-in ski-out), Hotel Scoiattolo (3-star ski-to-door).

Farther east, 3 Zinnen Dolomites Ski Resort, near the Austrian border, is an excellent destination for intermediate and advanced-intermediate skiers. Quieter than many of the larger Dolomite resorts, it is particularly well suited to families and travelers who want to combine downhill skiing with snowshoeing, winter hiking, or cross-country skiing. Finally, don’t overlook Carezza Ski Resort for a short, peaceful winter escape. Nestled beneath the dramatic Rosengarten massif, Carezza offers uncrowded slopes, magnificent scenery, and convenient access from Tiers, Carezza, and Nova Levante. I recommend staying in one of these ski-in ski-out hotels Sporthotel Passo Carezza, Hotel Alpenrose, or Moseralm. 

If you’re looking to combine downhill skiing with snowshoeing, Cyprianerhof Dolomit Resort in Tires is an outstanding choice. The hotel offers complimentary guided snowshoe hikes every day, while a ski lift located directly across the street provides seamless access to the Carezza ski area. Upper Val Venosta 

In the far west of South Tyrol, where Italy meets Austria and Switzerland, the Upper Val Venosta (Upper Vinschgau) offers a quieter alpine escape framed by some of Italy’s most dramatic mountain scenery.

The valley is an excellent base for exploring several distinctive ski areas. Spend a day carving the panoramic slopes of Schöneben-Haideralm (65 km of pistes), ski beneath the towering Ortler massif at Sulden am Ortler (44 km), or enjoy the family-friendly terrain of Erlebnisberg Watles (14.5 km). Just across the Austrian border, Nauders adds an additional 75 km of runs.

Beyond downhill skiing, Upper Val Venosta is a paradise for snowshoeing and winter hiking. Due to avalanche risk, it’s best to consult your hotel, or the local tourist office for specific route recommendations. 

For the ultimate winter getaway, I recommend staying in DAS GERSTL Alpine Retreat, an impeccably- and responsibly-run hotel set at 1500 m above Burgeis. They offer guided winter hiking excursions for when you want a break from their incredible spa and panoramic infinity pools. Sterzing

Sterzing (Vipiteno in Italian) is located in the Southern Wipptal Valley, south of the Brenner Mountain Pass. The Old Town of Vipiteno hosts a charming Christmas Market in its pedestrianized center between late November and early January. 

Surrounded by quiet valleys that run deep into the Alps, Sterzing is an off-the-beaten-path destination for winter adventuring. 

Locals love skiing in Ratschings-Jaufen (28 km), Rosskopf-Monte Cavallo (20 km), and Ladurns (18 km). Check out 4-star Berghotel Ratschings and 5-star Tenne Lodges, located at the Ratschings ski base.
