Latemar Dolomites Ski Resort Review: Obereggen – Predazzo

Latemar Dolomites is the largest ski resort in the Val di Fiemme-Obereggen Ski Area, which is part of the Dolomiti Superski network

Accessible from Obereggen, Pampeago, and Predazzo, Ski Center Latemar stretches across the western and southern flank of the Latemar Group in South Tyrol – Trentino. The main base is Obereggen.

We skied in the Latemar Dolomites ski resort in mid-March. Here’s my honest review.

Pros and Cons of Skiing Latemar Dolomites

Pros

Excellent ski infrastructure

Few gondolas

Seamless skiing between Obereggen and Predazzo

No long flat connecting runs: ideal for snowboarders

Striking mountain huts, especially Oberholz and In.Treska

Cons

Views are less dramatic compared to other Dolomiti Superski resorts

Limited number of standout slopes

Atmosphere can feel a bit subdued

My Impression of Skiing Latemar Dolomites (Obereggen)

Latemar Ski Resort, Dolomites

We skied Latemar Dolomites during our March trip to Val d’Ega (Eggental) and came away with mixed feelings.

Visiting late in the season had its advantages, with no lift lines and pleasantly uncrowded slopes. We started the day on the Obereggen-Oberholz lift, skiing Oberholz (red run #2) several times. It’s a fantastic, well-groomed slope. From there, we moved on to the Absam Maierl area, where Maierl (red run #5) stood out as another highlight.

Ski slope, Latemar Obereggen

As we made our way across the resort toward Predazzo, the connections were impressively seamless. The infrastructure is simply excellent.

However, the overall slope quality began to decline in Tresca (red run #30), starting from the Tresca mountain station, was still enjoyable, but much of the terrain beyond that had turned bumpy and slushy by midday, especially Cinque Nazioni (red run #35) and Variante Muro Santa (black run #20a). I had the impression that the Predazzo slopes were not groomed.

On the return toward Obereggen, red runs #9 and #9a were pleasant surprises, and luckily not slushy.

The true highlights of the day were dining in In.Treska and Oberholz Hütte, an architectural gem designed by Peter Pichler and Pavol Mikolajcak.

Overall, Latemar ski resort is worth a day of skiing, but not a dedicated multi-day trip. We stayed in Nova Levante in order to ski both Latemar and Carezza, which was a smart choice. We enjoyed Carezza Ski resort significantly more.

Latemar Dolomites Ski Huts

In.Treska

Located just below the Tresca mountain station at 2,200 m, In.Treska is a gourmet ski hut specializing in grilled meats, locally- and internationally sourced. I ordered the radicchio tarte tatin, which was very flavorful. Come for the sweeping panoramic views, coal-fired meats, and wine.

Oberholz Hütte

Oberholz Hütte is a contemporary ski hut, striking both inside and out. Inspired by the form of a fallen tree, the timber structure branches out towards the slope in a curvaceous form. The trio of A-frame dining rooms, with floor-to-ceiling windows, looks out across Val d’Ega. If you want a coveted window seat, do make a reservation.

The interior, which reminded me of a hull of a ship, impresses with its sloped roof geometry. The whole structure is entirely made of spruce, larch, and oak.

Though the food was enjoyable, the interior steals the show.

Best Base for Skiing in Ski Center Latemar

Hotel Cristal, Obereggen
Hotel Cristal

Obereggen is the best base for skiing Latemar Dolomites. However, I’d also consider Nova Levante if you want to also ski Carezza. We stayed in Hotel Berghaus Rosengarten, a lovingly-run 3-star hotel with half board and a small spa.
