Hotel Milla Montis: Gourmet Design Hotel in South Tyrol, Italy

Hotel Milla Montis is a Michelin Key hotel in Meransen (Maranza) in South Tyrol, near the Italian Dolomites. This 4-star superior hotel occupies a peaceful expanse surrounded by meadows, overlooking Puster Valley (Val Pusteria) and Eisack Valley (Valle Isarco).

Kati and I stayed 4 nights in Hotel Milla Montis in autumn. We loved everything about this eye-catching hotel: the novel architecture, the creative cuisine, the dreamy views, and the peaceful location.

This design hotel, built in 2020, is the brainchild of Franziska and Chef Roland, who set out to create a contemporary oasis embedded in nature that both respects and reinvents tradition.

We think that Milla Montis is the perfect getaway in South Tyrol for couples who value contemporary design, gourmet food, and tranquility. Check rates and availability.

The Location

Meransen (Maranza), Gitschberg-Jochtal, South Tyrol, Italy

The village of Meransen (Maranza) is located on a high plateau at an altitude of 1414 meters  in the Gitschberg-Jochtal ski area, which is part of the Dolomiti Superski network

The small, family-friendly Gitschberg-Jochtal ski area comprises 55 km of ski slopes and 15 lifts. During the winter ski season (December – mid-March), Hotel Milla Montis shuttles guests to and from the Gitschberg lift station.

In summer and autumn, guests can embark on numerous hikes in the local Pfunderer Mountains. During our stay, we visited the Almdorf Fane Alm, walked across the Lüsner Alm, and hiked in Val di Funes

The Property

Hotel Milla Montis Contemporary Design by Peter Pichler Architecture, Meransen, South Tyrol, Italy

Hotel Milla Montis was designed by Peter Pichler Architecture, the distinguished Milan-based studio behind some of Italy’s most groundbreaking architectural projects like Oberholz mountain hut and Hotel Schgaguler in Castelrotto.

The hotel structure is a contemporary reimagining of a South Tyrolean wooden barn. The curved exoskeleton façade is inspired by the pitchfork

Though striking in every possible way, Hotel Milla Montis blends in harmoniously with its rural environment. The offset, 4-volume structure is intentionally built into the slope, so it doesn’t visually disrupt the surroundings.

In contrast to the blackened larch-clad exterior, the interiors are light and airy, featuring regionally-sourced ash wood and green loden textiles. Every room is a masterpiece of contemporary functional design.

Aesthetics aside, the compact layout of the hotel is intuitive and thus easy to navigate. You never feel lost, or confused about where things are.

If you believe that beauty is nourishment for the heart and soul, then I can assure you that a stay at Milla Montis will feel invigorating in more ways than one.

The Rooms

Hotel Milla Montis Room, Meransen, South Tyrol, Italy

All rooms are south-facing, sharing the same glorious outlook of Eisacktal and the Dolomites. Rooms either have private balconies, or private terraces that connect to the garden.

We loved the floor-to-ceiling windows, parquet floors, pared-back minimalist design, and the views of the mountains, soft silhouettes in the morning light.

There is ample space for storing two luggages, other bags, and clothing.

Wellness and Spa

Hotel Milla Montis outdoor pool, Meransen, South Tyrol, Italy

Use of the pristine and well-maintained spa area is complimentary for all guests. Bathrobes are provided.

There’s a heated outdoor infinity pool, steam bath, Finnish sauna, hay sauna, and two relaxation rooms. On warmer days, guests can also lounge outside.

Hay saunas are increasingly popular in South Tyrolean hotels. The hay bath is actually an old “wellness remedy.” After spending the whole day haymaking, farmers in the past would sleep on layers of hay and then wake up feeling refreshed and full of energy. Scientific studies now show that hay baths help with osteoarthritis, sciatica, and rheumatism.

The only thing that could be improved is the size of the relaxation room. If the hotel is at full capacity, then the main lounge area is overly cramped.

Dining

Hotel Milla Montis Restaurant, Meransen, South Tyrol, Italy

Consistent with the design of the hotel, the dining room features floor-to-ceiling windows and a timber pitched ceiling. I recommend requesting a window table for the best experience.

Breakfast

Mornings at Milla Montis begin with a breakfast buffet, featuring all the essentials, freshly baked bread, and a premium selection of loose leaf tea. In addition, there are daily made-to-order breakfast specials – all very delicious.

Coffee is served to the table.

We savored our breakfasts by the window, watching the daylight transform the landscape.

Dinner

Staunch believers in “using the best produces the best,” the Milla Montis owners endeavor to source most of their ingredients from local South Tyrolean farms. To have a more varied kitchen, they source additional products from the greater Alpine region.

With the owner Roland at the helm, dishes are executed with precision and creativity.

Each evening, we were treated to a thoughtfully-created dinner menu (with options).

The pacing is on the slower side, perfect for elegant and romantic evenings. Europeans will likely find it very agreeable. Americans may find it slow.

Bar & Lounge

The lobby spills into the bar and lounge, another attractive space you can enjoy throughout the day.

In the afternoon, treat yourself to a complimentary slice of cake at the bar.

Service and Staff

Milla Montis is run by a very professional team. The service is excellent!! We can only offer praise for the staff and management.
