Logar Valley Travel Guide: Where to Hike, Eat, Stay

โ€œWhen I die, scatter my ashes here.โ€ Thatโ€™s what I (Sabrina) said to Kati when we first saw Logar Valley (Logarska Dolina in Slovenian).

A single, linden-lined road leads into the glacial valley, drawing your gaze from the traditional farmsteads up to the glorious Kamnik-Savinja Alps. The rooftop of Logar Valley is formed by a majestic procession of peaks: Ojstrica, Planjava, Brana, Turska gora, and Rinkas.

We recommend spending at least 2-3 nights in this pristine corner of Slovenia to hike in the mountains, visit the neighboring valleys of Robanov Kot and Matkov Kot, and drive the Solฤava Panoramic Road.

These are our favorite things to do in and around Logar Valley, based on several trips over the last few years.

Essential Travel Tips

Lenar Farm, Kamnik-Savinja Alps Mountain View, Logar Valley, Slovenia

Entrance Fee | Logar Valley is a protected nature park. Between April and October, there is an entrance fee to drive into the park: 10 EUR for cars, 7 EUR for motorbikes, 20 EUR for vans, and 70 EUR for buses. Visitors entering Logarska Dolina on foot or by bicycle are exempt from paying a fee.

When to Visit | For low-elevation walking, cycling, and sightseeing, visit between May and October. For high-altitude hiking, we recommend visiting in (late June), July, August, or September. Avoid visiting Logar Valley on these busy holidays: May 1st, May 2nd, and August 15th.

How to Get to Logar Valley | Situated in the tiny and sparsely populated Solฤavsko region in northern Slovenia, Logar Valley is isolated from the rest of the country. Public transit to the valley is neither straightforward nor regular, so youโ€™ll need a rental car to access this remote corner of the country.

Driving to Logar Valley via Austria and the Pavliฤ Pass | You can approach Logarska Dolina from Austria via Paulitsch Pass (Pavliฤ Pass). Thereโ€™s a narrow, serpentine mountain road in Austria that connects the Slovenian mountain village of Zgornje Jezersko with Logar Valley and Solฤava. Only drive this way on days with excellent visibility. Itโ€™s the most scenic approach to Logar Valley because it affords continuous panoramic views of the Kamnik-Savinja mountains.

Driving to Logar Valley from Kamnik | More commonly, you can reach Logar from the town of Kamnik (1-hour drive). If youโ€™re driving from Ljubljana to Logar Valley directly, it’ll take around 1:30 hours. Use the Promet website for up-to-date traffic updates. Sometimes there’s road construction around the valleys of Solฤavsko.

Where to Stay | There are only a few places to stay in Logar Valley: Lenar Farm (midrange), Hiลกa Ojstrica (midrange), Eko hiลกa-Eco House Na razpotju (midrange-luxury), and Hotel Plesnik (luxury). If you’re unable to secure accommodation in the valley, check out nearby Guesthouse Planinski Dom Majerhold (budget), Turistiฤna kmetija Strevc (budget), and Farm Stay Alpine Dreams (budget).

Logar Valley Hikes

Logarska Dolina Walking Trail

Logar Valley Road, Slovenia

A 7-km ethnographic path runs the length of Logarska Dolina. It takes 2:30 – 3 hours to walk the entire valley trail one-way. However, you can choose to walk a shorter segment, as there are several trailheads and car parks located in the middle of the valley.

The trail begins 1 km from the valley entrance and ticket booth. If youโ€™re entering Logar Valley on foot, you will first walk along the paved road for about 15 minutes, before turning right onto the trail.

Look for the “Pot po Logarski dolini” trail signs.

The trail ends at the Rinka waterfall.

Slap Rinca Walk

Slap Rinka (Rinka Waterfall) in Logar Valley, Slovenia

The 90-meter high Slap Rinka (Rinka Waterfall) is the source of the Savinja River. It’s located at the head of valley.

From the car park at the end of the Logar Valley road, a stony path steadily ascends beech forest to the base of the Rinka Waterfall. Allow 10-15 minutes to hike to the base of the falls.

Next to Rinka Falls is a wooden, treehouse-style structure called Orlovo Gnezdo (Eagle’s Nest), where visitors can purchase drinks and souvenirs.

From Rinka Waterfall, you can extend the hike to Okreลกelj, the Kamnik Saddle, and Ledinski Vrh.

Trail Variations | For a slighter longer walk, we recommend parking at Logarski kot (Google Maps). When you return, you can eat lunch in this hut’s scenic garden.

Okreลกelj Glacial Amphitheater Hike

Logar valley to Okreลกelj Glacial Amphitheater hiking trail, Slovenia

Okreลกelj is a glacial amphitheater under the steep walls of Turska gora, Rink, Kriลพ and Mrzla gora. Although this hike is very short, it packs in a surprising amount of terrain variation and alpine character.

Starting at the car park at the end of the Logar Valley road, the Okreลกelj-bound trail first leads to the Rinka Falls (10 minutes). After crossing the footbridge over the river, the trail steeply twists uphill.

The mountain path is secured with fixed cables and bolstered with timber steps and ladders. After hiking a few meters along a secured ledge, a wooden staircase leads to a footbridge over the cascading stream.

After crossing the stream, the secured path climbs up another timber staircase. Fixed cables aid the ascent.

Light scrambling is needed to navigate a few boulders and climb up a rock step.

Next, hikers must ascend a steep passage, which seems like a re-route. I used the tree roots to hoist myself up. The path leads across a limestone river bed. After scrambling down a few blindingly white boulders, the path ascends once again through beech forest.

When the trail finally levels out, it spills into the open, flower-strewn meadows of Okreลกelj. In early summer, keep an eye out for globe flowers, Carniolan lilies, and slipper orchids.

Perched on the edge of the cirque, the newly rebuilt Frischaufov dom na Okreลกlju mountain hut (1396 m) boasts a commanding view over Logar Valley. However, as of May 2025, construction is still paused due to funding issues. Near the structure, a small kiosk sells food and drinks to hikers.

Good to Know | It’s possible to extend this hike to Ledinski Vrh, or to the Kamnik Saddle.

Trailhead | Bar Pod Slapom / Parking Lot at the end of the Logar Valley Road

Distance | 3.2 km out-and-back

Time Needed | 2 hours

Elevation Gain/Loss | 374 meters

Difficulty | Moderately difficult due to the loose rocky terrain, steepness of the path, and scrambling.

Kamnik Saddle Hike

Kamniลกka koฤa na Kamniลกkem sedlu, Kamnik Saddle Hike from Logar Valley

The Kamnik Saddle, one of the most picturesque alpine landscapes in the Slovenian Alps, lies between Mount Brana and Mount Planjava.

The trail to the Kamnik saddle follows the same route as the Okreลกlj glacial amphitheater hike.

From Okreลกlj, it’s another 1:30 hours to the saddle along a strenuous route, with steep secured passages and scree terrain.

Given the brittleness of limestone terrain, I recommend wearing a helmet like this black diamond half dome helmet.

After the demanding ascent, your efforts will be rewarded with sensational views of Logar Valley as well as jaw-dropping views of Mount Brana, Mount Planjava, and numerous other Kamnik peaks.

Grab lunch and a cold drink at the Kamniลกka koฤa na Kamniลกkem sedlu mountain hut (1864 m), happily situated below the saddle. You earned it!

To return to Logarska Dolina, follow the same route back down.

Trailhead | Bar Pod Slapom / Parking Lot at the end of the Logar Valley Road

Distance | 8.2 km out-and-back

Time Needed | 4:30 – 5 hours

Elevation Gain/Loss | 934 meters

Difficulty | Demanding. Alpine hiking experience recommended.

When to Go | June – September

Koฤa na Klemenฤi jami

Koฤa na Klemenฤi jami, Logar Valley, Kamnik-Savinja Alps, Slovenia

Ringed by meadows and forest at an elevation of 1208 meters, the managed Koฤa na Klemenฤi jami pod Ojstrico mountain hut serves as an idyllic rest stop on the way up to Strelovec, Krofiฤka, or even Ojstrica.

To start the hike, head to the Dom planincev v Logarski dolini mountain lodge, or simply Dom Planincev. Exact Location: Google Maps.

The trailhead is marked with a large sign displaying photos of Klemenฤi jami. Follow the flat gravel track branching into the forest. After about 5 minutes, youโ€™ll reach a signed intersection. For about an hour, the path zigzags up the forest.

With impressive mountain views, this serene spot invites you to relax, drink a beer, and eat traditional Slovenian food. During our last visit, they were serving Idrijski ลพlikrofi (Slovenian dumplings),  Ajdovi ลพganci -(buckwheat spoonbread), Gobova Juha (mushroom soup), Kranjska Klobasa (sausage), and Jabolฤni zavitek (apple strudel).

To extend the hike, continue ascending two hours to Strelovec (1763 m), the long mountain ridge that rises between Logar Valley and Robanov Kot. The ridgetop views are phenomenal. From Strelovec, itโ€™s possible to continue hiking all the way down to the neighboring valley Robanov Kot. Ambitious hikers with alpine experience can hike from Klemenฤi jami to Ojstrica (2350 m).

Opening Times | The hut is usually open from April until the end of September. In April and May, the hut is only open on the weekends. Starting in June, Klemenฤi jami is open daily until the end of September.

Trailhead | Dom Planincev v Logarski dolini (837 m)

4 Things to Do around Logar Valley

1. Drive the Solฤava Panoramic Road

Solฤava Panoramic Road, Kamnik-Savinja Alps, Slovenia

The Solฤava Panoramic Road is a 21-km driving, or mountain biking route that delivers magical views of high-altitude farms, Logar Valley, Matkov Kot, and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. The main route starts in the town Solฤava and ends at the entrance to Logarska Dolina. The route can also be extended 8 km to Matkov Kot and 6 km to Bukovc farm.

As you follow the route, you will see numbered information boards describing the scenes in front of you.

There are 12 total stops. Many of the notable stops are tourist farms that serve regional cuisine.

Our favorite viewpoints along the Solฤava Panoramic Road are Holy Spirit Church and Strevc Tourist Farm (Stop #5), the Lookout Point and Klemenลกek Tourist Farm (Stop #7), and Pastirkovo Lookout Point (Stop #8).

Check Promet website for up-to-date road conditions.

2. Visit Robanov Kot Valley

Robanov Kot, Solcava, Slovenia

Robanov Kot is another glacial valley in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. It takes its name from the farmstead Roban, which has been in operation for 800 years.

To reach Robanov Kot from Logar Valley, drive in the direction of Solฤava village. After passing the village, look for a signed right turn. This drive is about 8 km and takes 10 minutes.

Unlike Logar Valley, there isnโ€™t a long road leading deep into the valley. Only the valley entrance is populated.

There are two wonderful things to do in Robanov Kot: walk the valley trail and eat lunch or dinner at Turistiฤna kmetija Govc -Vrลกnik.

Upon entering the valley, either park at Turistiฤna kmetija Govc -Vrลกnik (Google Maps), or continue another 400 meters to a final parking area at Roban Farm (Google Maps).

From the car park, it’s a pleasant 6.5 km out-and-back walk to the Robanova planina and the Roban dairy farm, which is open in July and August. Allow at least 2.15 hours to walk this trail.

Farm-to-Table Meals at Turistiฤna kmetija Govc – Vrลกnik

Turistiฤna kmetija Govc - Vrลกnik farm meal, Robanov Kot, Slovenia

For us, hiking and dining go hand-in-hand. If you want the ultimate reward for all your active pursuits, head directly to Turistiฤna kmetija Govc -Vrลกnik for lunch, or dinner. Reservations are highly recommended.

The family-run Govc farm offers a fixed dinner menu, starting with a large bowl of soup (e.g. beef broth, pumpkin soup, mushroom soup) and fresh salad.

The main course, presented on a single large serving tray, contains chicken, pork, beef, cranberry sauce, cooked carrots and cabbage, potatoes, ลกtruklji (rolled dough with cottage cheese) and ลพlikrofi (boiled dumplings). All the meat is locally sourced straight from their own farm, ensuring a true farm-to-table experience.

Dinner concludes with a homemade dessert, likely Apfelstrudel. Warning: you might overeat.

Update | We have now eaten here five times. The food has been consistently excellent each time.

3. Eat Goat Cheese in the Matk Farm in Matkov Kot Valley

Goat cheese plate at Matk Tourist Farm, Matkov Kot, Slovenia

Turistiฤna kmetija Matk is a tourist farm in Matkov Kot, the most secluded and wild valley in the Solฤavsko region. In fact, the valley gets its name from the farm.

Matk’s house specialty is goat milk products. Come here for a delicious sampling of their goat cheese and goat-milk ice cream.

Situated at a lofty elevation of 1165 meters, the view from the farm is also stunning.

4. Savor Solฤavsko Regional Specialties

Bevsek Osep Farm Herbal Tea - Things to do around Logar Valley, Slovenia

The Solฤavsko regional is known for its organic, fresh locally-grown ingredients. A few things to try are sirnek (aged cheese), Zgornjesavinski ลพelodec (Upper-Savinja salami), and ลพlinkrofi (boiled dumplings).

The best place to taste these specialties is at the local tourist farms. You can also purchase other regional products like honey, herbal tea, and various compotes, at the Rinka Center gift shop in the village of Solฤava.

Tea lovers ought to purchase Bevsek Osep Farm’s organic mountain tea, sold at the Rinka Center and Lenar Farm. All herbs are handpicked from the surrounding mountains. In their heart-warming โ€œAlpski Druลพinski ฤajโ€ tea blend, there’s wild marjoram, wild calendula, dandelion leaves, elderflower, wild thyme and more. Whenever we’re in the area, we purchase several bags. It’s the best herbal tea in the world!!

Dating back to the 15th century, the Bevsek Osep farmstead is made-up of an old mill, which was in operation until the 1960s, a large barn adorned with mid-19th-century frescoes, and a number of newer buildings. Like most farms in the region, Bevsek Osep is run and managed by several generations.

The Bevsek Osep family is currently building out their tea shop on their grounds. Mojca, a member of the Bevsek Osep family, runs workshops for small groups about self-sufficient farming, homemade teas and syrups, and regional history.

Ursa goes out of her way to make sure all your questions are answered. She gave us numerous tips on hiking trails in and around the valley. We never felt like we were taking too much of her time, or asking too many questions (a great feeling when youโ€™re someone who asks a lot of questions).

Rather we felt like the family genuinely wanted us to be there and enjoy our stay.

Planลกarija Logarski kot

Planลกarija Logarski kot, Logar Valley, Slovenia

Planลกarija Logarski kot stands on a meadow beneath the sheer rock faces of Planjava.

Situated in the upper part of the Logar Valley, this is the perfect place to grab lunch after hiking to the Rinka waterfall, or Okreลกlj.

Logarski Kot serves home-made, regional food like Gobova Juha (mushroom soup), cured meats and cheeses, and Ajdovi ลพganci (buckwheat spoonbread).

Historically, Logarski kot used to be an alpine dairy farm and later a partisan hospital. In 1939, the wooden hut was built as a mountain shelter by a local farmer named Franc Logar.

Hiลกa Ojstrica is a restaurant and guesthouse in Logar Valley, located across the road from Lenar Farm.

Positioned in the middle of the valley and surrounded by meadows, Penzion kmeฤka hiลกa Ojstrica boasts some of the finest views of Ojstrica, Planjava, Brana and the Kamnik Saddle.

Watching the sunset from their outdoor terrace whilst enjoying a three-course dinner is the ultimate way to end your day in Logar Valley.

The service is always very quick and friendly. Their soups are delicious!

Hotel Plesnik

For lunch, guests can choose from Hotel Plesnikโ€™s ร  la carte menu, while dinner features a refined four-course set menu, offering at least two options per course. Thanks to new management, dinner is now open to non-hotel guests as well.

During our last visit, we dined here and were impressed by the excellent food and polished service. That said, itโ€™s on the pricier side at 60 EUR per person.

  2. Hi
We are interested in visiting Logar Valley this coming November (if weather permits) and we would like to walk the themed trail. Would you be able to suggest where we can leave our rental car? Is there a parking at the beginning of the trail please?

    • Hi Leanne,
There’s a small parking area close to the entrance of Logar Valley. We’ve parked there a few times.

  3. I hope to visit the Logar Valley and also the Panoramic Road in mid-May 2022. I don’t want to hire a car from Ljbuljana. Are there any small tours leaving from Ljubljana that take visitors to this beautiful place? Thank you!
