Review: Alpenwellness Hotel St. Veit in Sexten, Dolomites

Set in the mountain village of Sexten in the Dolomites, Alpenwellness Hotel St. Veit is a third-generation, family-run hotel where hospitality feels natural and heartfelt.

Kati and I stayed here in mid-February, and what impressed us the most was the extraordinary team. Every interaction, whether with the reception staff, dining team, the spa professionals, or the family who runs the hotel, felt genuine and warm.

You feel truly looked after, not in a rehearsed or overly polished way, but in a way that makes you want to linger and return. We left feeling as though we had made friends.

Beyond its welcoming spirit, Alpenwellness Hotel St. Veit, a member of Vitalpina® Hotels Südtirol is ideal for active travelers who want to immerse themselves in the mountains, whether on foot, by bike, or on skis. With three complimentary guided hikes each week, ski-in ski-out access to 3 Zinnen Dolomites Ski Resort and complimentary rentals of hiking poles, backpacks, snowshoes, and bikes, exploring the area is effortless.

It also excels in the kitchen. In a region known for meat- and dairy-heavy cuisine, the hotel thoughtfully accommodates vegetarians and guests with gluten or lactose intolerances, provided needs are shared in advance. Sustainability underpins it all, from local ingredient sourcing and fermentation to solar energy and heat recovery.

Alpenwellness Hotel St. Veit is all about living well in the mountains, with care and intention in every detail.

The Location

Alpenwellness Hotel St. Veit, Sexten Dolomites

Alpenwellness Hotel St. Veit is located in the village of Sexten (Sesto), which lies in a side valley of Upper Puster Valley in South Tyrol. Nestled between the Sexten Dolomites and the Carnic Alps, Sexten is the ultimate base for active travelers all-year-long.

Set in a quiet location above the main valley road, the hotel offers guests true tranquility paired with breathtaking views of the Sexten Sundial

Winter guests enjoy ski-in ski-out access to the 3 Zinnen Dolomites Ski Resort, numerous cross-country skiing circuits, and various winter hiking and snowshoe trails.

In summer and autumn, guests can set off on numerous hiking trails like Val Fiscalina directly from the hotel’s doorstep. Additional trails and via ferrata routes are easily reached by bus or car including Vallon Popera starting at Kreuzbergpass / Passo Monte Croce di Comelico or Torre dei Scarperi Circuit Trail starting in Innerfeldtal / Val Campo di Dentro.

Car-Free Travel | It’s entirely possible to stay here without a car. If you’re arriving by train, Alpenwellness Hotel St. Veit provides a complimentary pick-up service from San Candido train station. Most trailheads are easily reached on foot or by bus. For destinations beyond those options, transfers can be arranged upon request.

Active Program: 3 Guided Hikes Per Week

True to its philosophy, Alpenwellness Hotel St. Veit invites guests to discover the beauty of the surrounding mountains through an active program featuring three complimentary guided hikes per week.

In summer and autumn, these hikes are led by the hotel’s in-house hiking guide.

In winter, snowshoe and winter hikes are led by certified mountain guides from the Alpinschule Dreizinnen Sexten. Due to avalanche danger in winter, it’s advisable to join these guided excursions if you want to go hiking, beyond the prepared paths.

During our stay in February, we joined the guided snowshoe hike from Kreuzbergpass to Pfandleck. At Kreuzbergpass, the mountain guides distributed all necessary equipment, including snowshoes and hiking poles, and personally assisted guests in fastening their snowshoes before setting off.

They set a steady and sustainable pass to Nemes Hut and onwards to the Pfandleck ridge. On the return journey, we ate lunch at Nemes Hütte.

Although I was initially hesitant about joining a guided group hike, I’m so glad I did. The experience was completely stress-free and enjoyable. Furthermore, with our limited winter snowshoeing experience and knowledge of avalanche safety, we wouldn’t have been able to undertake such a hike on our own.

During the guided excursion, I spoke with a few hikers who said that they visit Sexten every winter in order to join these guided hikes.

Weekly Program | Upon check-in, guests receive a weekly program, detailing the scheduled hikes, themed dinners, and sauna infusion sessions for the week. Guided hikes take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Registration | If you’d like to join any of the guided excursions, simply sign-up the day before 4:45 pm at the reception.

Free Equipment Rental | Hiking poles and backpacks are located in each room. You can also rent snowshoes and bikes at the reception. E-bikes are an extra charge. Microspikes are available for purchase at the hotel shop.

Hiking Map | I recommend asking the reception for the double-sided Sexten Dolomites hiking map, with one side dedicated to winter trails and the other to summer routes. These maps are sold in the Sexten Tourism Office (Haus der Berge), but complimentary for hotel guests.

Wellness Area & Spa

Outdoor pool, Alpenwellness Hotel St. Veit

The wellness area features a year-round outdoor heated swimming pool and hot tub, an indoor pool, and a relaxing sauna zone.

The sauna area includes a Swiss stone pine Finnish sauna (90°C), a Tyrolean bio sauna (65°C), a two-person infrared cabin, and a steam sauna. Guests can also unwind in the smokehouse relaxation area or enjoy mountain views from the panoramic relaxation room.

A sauna master conducts two sauna infusions per week. The time is noted in the weekly program.

The highlight of the wellness area is the beauty spa, where you can indulge in a wide range of massages and treatments. Alpenwellness Hotel St. Veit has created a selection of bespoke treatments inspired by local alpine traditions, thoughtfully designed to enhance relaxation and overall wellbeing.

For example, the massage with aromatic herb packs is a soothing treatment enhanced with steam-heated herbal stamps. It gently stimulates blood circulation, promotes deep relaxation, and helps activate metabolism. These stamps are created in-house by Gertraud (owner), who personally selects and collects the herbs by hand

During our stay, we had the pleasure of experiencing the healing touch of Verena, the resident cosmetologist and masseuse; we highly recommend booking a massage with her.

Good to Know | Bathrobes, towels, slippers, and a spa bag are provided in your room.

Dining

At Alpenwellness Hotel St. Veit, guests can look forward to a generous breakfast buffet, an afternoon snack, and a refined five-course dinner each evening.

What truly sets the hotel apart is its thoughtful culinary philosophy: a strong commitment to sourcing high-quality ingredients locally whenever possible, a conscious effort to reduce food waste through techniques like fermentation, and a genuine belief that every guest deserves an exceptional dining experience, regardless of dietary restrictions.

During our stay, we were able to visit Käserei Sexten, the local dairy cooperative, that supplies St. Veit hotel with their cheese and dairy.

Traditionally, mountain cuisine tends to be rich in meat and dairy. As a result, vegans, vegetarians, or those with lactose or gluten intolerances often struggle to enjoy the same level of quality and care in alpine destinations.

Here, however, dietary needs are taken seriously. The kitchen team makes a real effort to create satisfying, well-balanced alternatives, but it is essential to communicate any intolerances or special diets in advance, ideally at the time of booking.

While the team is wonderfully accommodating, giving prior notice ensures they can prepare thoughtfully and maintain the high standard they are known for.

Dinner

Dinner begins with a colorful antipasti and salad buffet, followed by the daily soup, which guests may serve themselves. The next three courses are elegantly served to the table. If preferred, any course can be substituted with a more traditional dish. The alternative dishes are also listed on the menu.

Throughout the week, the hotel hosts themed dinners, including Tyrolean, Italian, vegetarian, and St. Veit evenings, each offering a distinct culinary experience. Our favorite menu was from the vegetarian evening, even though we are not vegetarians.

Afternoon Snack

Enjoying the afternoon snack in Alpenwellness Hotel St. Veit

Between 3 pm and 5 pm, a savory and sweet snack awaits guests in the lounge. The savory snack includes South Tyrolean Speck, cheese, pickles and bread. The sweet snack features a selection of mouthwatering cakes and other pastries.

After a day of active exploration, it’s a real treat to savor these goodies in the beautiful panoramic lounge, adjacent to the bar.

Breakfast

In true South Tyrolean fashion, breakfast is a generous spread with just about everything you could wish for. The highlight for me was the selection of homemade cakes.

There is also a juicer with vegetables, ginger, and fruit for fresh juice. You can choose to order coffee to your table, or help yourself using the coffee machine. Made-to-order eggs are offered as well, though not advertised.

Our Room: Swallow’s Nest Suite

We stayed in the Swallow’s Nest Suite, a spacious room with stone pine panelling, a living area with a couch and coffee table, and a modern bathroom with a shower and bathtub.

The balcony view of the Sexten Sundial is, without question, the room’s standout feature.

Good to Know | The hotel offers around a dozen different room, suite, and apartment options. Apartments are located in a nearby annex building.

Ski Facilities & Services

Ski Room with Personal Lockers | The ski room is conveniently located on the ground floor. Each room is assigned a private locker fitted with a heated boot rack. To access your locker, simply scan your keycard on the reader beside the main entrance door.

Ski-in Ski-out | To ski-out of the hotel, exit the ski locker door and then exit the building. Put your skis on and ski down the slope to the Helmjet valley station. Helmjet is a 10 seater gondola lift and serves as the main connection from Sexten to the 3 Zinnen Dolomites ski area.

Ski Shuttle Service | If there is sufficient snow, it’s possible to ski all the way back to the hotel. Skiers who don’t want to ski down to the valley station, and would prefer to take the cableway down, can return to the hotel with the shuttle bus, which departs at 3 pm and 4 pm.

Ski Instructor | The in-house ski instructor offers private ski lessons to hotel guests. Rates are discounted. You can book directly in the hotel.

Ski Passes | Ski passes are available at the reception, or online.

The Karadar Family

The Karadar family has run the hotel for three generations and is widely regarded as a pioneer of the Alpine wellness concept in South Tyrol. As a founding member of Vitalpina® Hotels Südtirol, they have embraced the group’s philosophy from the very beginning: healthy cuisine, guided outdoor experiences, sustainability, and holistic, mindful relaxation.

All family members are actively engaged in running the hotel. By working side by side with their team, the owners blend in so effortlessly that you may not notice you’re speaking with them.

We were impressed by how hardworking, caring, and dedicated they are, and by how comfortable and confident their staff is working alongside them.
