Boutique Hotel AMARIL Review: Adults-Only Oasis in Val Venosta, Italy

Adults-only Boutique Hotel AMARIL, a member of Vitalpina® Hotels Südtirol, is an oasis for travelers seeking peace, beauty, nourishing food, and endless cycling and hiking routes. 

Located in the Lower Val Venosta region of South Tyrol, just 24 km west of Merano, AMARIL spoils guests with its spacious suites and apartments, Eden-like gardens, wellness facilities, and of course gourmet cuisine. 

Kati and I stayed at Boutique Hotel AMARIL in mid-June, when the roses were in full bloom, and I can say without hesitation that it is one of the most restorative, serene, and memorable hotels we have ever experienced.

With the desire to create a hotel that they themselves would want to vacation in, the Pohl and Platter host families have intentionally designed a retreat that feels infinitely more exclusive and tranquil than your average 4-star hotel. There are no crowds at breakfast, no scramble for poolside loungers, and no constant hum of activity. Instead, there is space and stillness. It is, quite simply, a sanctuary.

The Location

Boutique Hotel AMARIL is located in the village of Kastelbell (Castelbello) in Lower Val Venosta valley, a region of South Tyrol defined by apple orchards, irrigation canal trails (Waalwege in German), castles, and vineyards. 

The sand-colored hotel stands just outside of the village center, encircled by 10,000 m2 of gardens. Beyond the gardens, there are endless apple orchards, vineyards, and mountains. 

Much of the appeal of staying at Boutique Hotel AMARIL lies in its peaceful, secluded setting, where the only sounds are birdsong and the wind whispering through the apricot trees. It feels like stepping into a secret garden, a sanctuary reserved for guests seeking tranquility, privacy, and uninterrupted relaxation.

The hotel is also advantageously positioned on cycling and e-biking trails, most notably the Adige Cycle Path, which forms part of the Via Claudia Augusta. From the hotel doorstep, you can hike into the mountains following the Via Vinum Venostis just beyond Schloss Castello – Kastelbell. 

More adventures abound in the nearby Val Venosta side valleys of Martelltal (Val Martello) in Stelvio National Park and Schnalstal in the Ötztal Alps.

Wellness Facilities & Spa

The Gardens and Infinity Pool

The hotel property is surrounded by beautifully-landcaped, terraced gardens and apricot trees, dotted with loungers and umbrellas. There’s ample lounge space for everyone. 

Bordering the sunbathing lawn and the main structure of the hotel lies the dreamy 20-meter-long infinity pool, with indoor access (32°C).

Rooftop Whirlpool

What’s better than a hot tub? Perhaps a rooftop whirlpool facing a medieval castle dating back to the 13th century? 

The rooftop whirlpool (36°C) is located on the third floor terrace, above the gym, at the top of a whimsical spiral staircase. This luxurious hot tub, constructed with Martell Valley plima granite enjoys an enchanting view of the Kastelbell castle. 

Because many guests have their own private hot tub, the whirlpool was empty during our visits.

Sauna Zone

AMARIL’s modern 520 m² sauna zone is an impeccably-designed wellness area with a Bio sauna (not to be missed) where fresh herbs crackle on the oven, steam sauna, Finnish sauna, ice fountain, showers, and two-story relaxation area. Complimentary tea and infused water are available on both levels.

The Rooms

Like the rest of the hotel, suites and apartments are furnished with exclusively local high-quality natural materials including oak and plima granite from Martell Valley. 

Apart from the elegant design and soothing palette, I loved the plush bed, spaciousness, and garden-facing private balcony, furnished with exceedingly comfortable patio furniture. Some suites even have private rooftop terraces.

I slept remarkably well here, perhaps in part due to the installed Geonado Frequenz-Welle, which supports sleep quality and regeneration and protects from electrosmog.

Dining 

Dinner

The hotel’s on-site restaurant TERRA, open for lunch and dinner, serves high-quality, seasonal dishes using regional ingredients and garden herbs. The cuisine is fresh, flavorful, and healthy. From the first bite to the last, everything I tasted was simply exquisite. The dining staff is also superb, always attentive.

Breakfast

Another highlight of staying at AMARIL is indulging in a slow, unhurried breakfast on the outdoor terrace. The breakfast features a buffet and freshly squeezed juices and smoothies supplemented with made-to-order savory and sweet dishes.

Guided Biking and Hiking Tours

A special highlight at AMARIL, in line with the Vitalpina active philosophy, is the opportunity to join guided hikes with the hotel’s own hiking guide or guided e-bike tours organised in cooperation with the Ötzi Bike Academy.

Our top priority during our stay was to sample part of the Via Claudia Augusta, one of the most popular transalpine cycle touring routes, which traces the ancient Roman road built by Emperor Claudius 2,000 years ago. 

As guests of AMARIL, you can rent e-bikes on-site and register for any of the Ötzi Bike Academy tours at a discounted rate, one of the hotel’s partners. Having never e-biked before, we were really happy to be able to join a guided 55 km tour to Laas, where we learned about the famous Laaser marble. 

Good to Know | Val Venosta enjoys one of the longest biking seasons in the Alps, stretching from March until November.
