TRIFORÊT alpin.resort: Luxury Ski-in Ski-out Hotel in Hinterstoder, Upper Austria

TRIFORÊT alpin.resort is a luxury ski-in ski-out hotel with deluxe rooms, apartments, and A-frame chalets in the Hinterstoder Ski Area in the Totes Gebirge (Dead Mountains) of Upper Austria.

This mountain retreat is located at Hutterer Böden (1410 m) near the Hössbahn mountain station above the town of Hinterstoder. Triforêt resort is accessible by cableway, or by the Höss Panorama Mountain Road toll road (free with the Pyhrn-Priel AktivCard). When driving in winter, snow chains are necessary to reach the property.

The town of Hinterstoder is a hidden gem in Austria, only frequented by in-the-know Austrians, Germans, and Czechs. Those seeking a peaceful retreat high-up in the mountains will find it at TRIFORÊT resort.

Naturally, Triforêt Alpin Resort is a perfect destination for a ski getaway. But, the Totes Gebirge range is also etched with splendid and blissfully quiet hiking trails. We recommend visiting in fall, when temperatures are cooler and the landscape transforms to autumnal shades of amber and gold.

In our Triforêt review, we’ve shared all our impressions of the Triforêt alpin resort, based on our 3-night stay in August.

Our stay was hosted. As always, all opinions are our own.

Location

TRIFORÊT alpin resort is located in the Hinterstoder Ski Resort within the Pyhrn-Priel holiday region of Upper Austria.

In winter, guests can ski down to the Höss-Express chairlift, located only 250 meters away from the resort.

In summer and autumn (weekends only in October), guests can ride the Höss-Express chairlift – included in the Pyhrn-Priel AktivCard – to access trails around Schafkogelsee.

To explore the wider Pyhrn-Priel holiday region and Kalkalpen National Park, it’s necessary to drive down the Höss Panorama Mountain Road to Hinterstoder Valley.

During our trip to Triforêt, we hiked from the Höss-Express chairlift mountain station to the Hans-Rubenzucker Steig, a high-alpine trail that leads to the summit of Schrocken (2261 m).

During our second day, we drove to Almgasthaus Baumschlagerreith in Hinterstoder Valley to hike the Stoderer Dolomitensteig. And on our day of departure, we walked to Schiederweiher.

The Triforêt Property

Triforêt Alpin Resort, Hinterstoder, Upper Austria

TRIFORÊT alpin.resort is made-up of a hotel, twenty-one chalets, and a restaurant. The elegant, triangle-shaped hotel houses the reception, bar, rooms and apartments, spa and wellness area, indoor-outdoor pool, and playroom, which doubles as a yoga room.

The property extends to the south, where the A-frame chalets stand in 3 rows on a grassy slope blooming with red poppies. Gravel pathways wind between the chalets, connecting each chalet to the hotel and Hutterer alpin restaurant.

The hotel restaurant, Hutterer alpin.restaurant, open to the public, is located just beyond the last row of chalets.

Check-in

Bar, Triforêt Alpin Resort, Hinterstoder, Upper Austria

Guests can check-in starting at 4 pm.

We arrived 90 minutes early. Though we were unable to enter our chalet before 4 pm, we were treated to a welcome drink in the stylish lounge-bar. We used the extra time to study the helpful Pyhrn-Priel holiday region hiking maps and pamphlets, available across from the reception.

Before arrival, guests must follow the early check-in instructions. It’s important to get your digital Pyhrn-Priel AktivCard set-up in advance, so that you can drive up the toll road to the hotel without incurring any fees. The toll gate opens when you scan the QR code of your digital Pyhrn-Priel AktivCard.

Curiously, there was no one tasked with personally showing us our chalet, or helping us with our luggage. The paths to and around the chalets are gravel, so you can’t just “roll” your suitcase to the entrance.

Chalets

Dining Room in Chalet, Triforêt Alpin Resort, Hinterstoder, Upper Austria

The chalets, available in varying sizes, are designed uniformly in a sophisticated, yet functional alpine-modern style.

Equipped with premium appliances and built using the finest materials, these luxurious spaces are ingeniously put together. It would seem that no expense was spared in furnishing these dreamy A-frame cabins, dressed in an earthy palette of brown and gray, offset by black.

Those that visit in winter will enjoy their own personal ski boot dryer rack, tucked away in a closet by the entrance. There’s also a sizable closet for ski jackets and winter coats.

Illuminated by Ice-cube-like pendant lights, stairs descend to the grand living room and an open-plan kitchen. Here, you’ll find a plush platform couch, an electric fireplace, and dining table that flows into the fully-equipped kitchen with Siemens appliances (dishwasher, oven, stove, fridge).

The living space is bordered by floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors, which open up to a furnished terrace. Since all chalets face south, each terrace enjoys privacy.

Bedroom, Triforêt Alpin Resort, Hinterstoder, Upper Austria

The upper level of the chalet is dedicated to the bedroom and the master bath, replete with a walk-in-shower, Finnish sauna, and fragrant Molton Brown toiletries. There’s another bathroom (toilet and shower) near the entrance.

The chalets are a work-of-art.

We loved the space and the quiet setting.

However, our experience was impacted by the heat. On hot summer days (29°C/84°F), our chalet was uncomfortably warm during the day, even with fully-drawn curtains. There is no AC and fans are not provided, even upon request. Though the temperature drops at night, the chalet was far too warm in the afternoon.

For that reason, we recommend visiting in winter, autumn, or on cooler days in summer.

Cleaning | Chalets are only cleaned upon request. If you need new towels, simply notify reception.

Dogs | Chalets are dog-friendly.

Wellness Area and Spa

Pool, Triforêt Alpin Resort, Hinterstoder, Upper Austria

The wellness area comprises an infinity pool, relaxation rooms, and a sauna area (steam, bio, and Finnish).

Triforêt is a family-friendly resort. As such, the pool was always brimming with children during the day. Starting at 6 pm, the whole wellness area is for adults only. However, this was not enforced during our stay.

Treatments are available in the spa.

Guests can also sign up for yoga classes, which take place at least once a day.

The Hutterer alpin.restaurant

Triforet Restaurant, Triforêt Alpin Resort restaurant, Hinterstoder, Upper Austria

Breakfast and dinner are served in the Hutterer alpin.restaurant. The restaurant design is striking, consistent with the rest of the Triforêt complex.

The interior is divided into two spaces: the main dining room and a lounge – dining area wrapped around an electric fireplace.

There’s also an outdoor terrace.

Breakfast, Triforêt Alpin Resort, Hinterstoder, Upper Austria

The breakfast buffet is laid out between 8 am and 10:30 am, which is on the late-side for hikers. Your choice of coffee is quickly served to the table. Made-to-order egg dishes are prepared upon request.

In the evening, guests can choose between the a la carte menu and the set menu, which changes daily. Though the a la carte menu lacks imagination, there is something for everyone: salads, soups, traditional Austrian dishes.

Final Thoughts

Triforêt Alpin Resort chalets in summer, Hinterstoder, Upper Austria

Located directly in a ski resort, Triforet was naturally imagined for winter tourism and winter guests.

If you visit during high summer, when it’s especially warm, Triforêt fails to deliver a great experience. The outdoor swimming pool is too warm (32 C). We were baffled that they didn’t decrease the pool temperature, given the heat.

Additionally, on hot days, the chalets are uncomfortably warm in the afternoons (between 12 pm and 5 pm). When we requested a fan, we were informed that they don’t have any fans, because they want to reduce their carbon footprint.

We recommend visiting only in autumn, when temperatures are cooler, or of course in winter.
