Where to Stay in Innsbruck: Best Areas + Hotels

Innsbruck, the eye-catching capital of Tyrol, is located in the Inn Valley of Austria, west of Salzburg.

From the city center, views extend to the impressive Nordkette, the southernmost range of the Karwendel mountains. Innsbruck’s mighty backdrop is one of our favorite hiking destinations in the Austrian Alps

While the city center of Innsbruck is a great base for sightseeing, dining, and nightlife, it’s not ideal for actively exploring the surrounding mountains and the greater Innsbruck area. If you’re visiting Innsbruck on a summer or autumn road trip like this 2-Week Austria Road Trip or 10-Day Tyrolean & Bavarian Alps Road Trip, you may want to stay in Lans for example. Gasthof Isserwirt (midrange) and Gasthof Walzl (4-star luxury) are excellent options.

When planning a trip to Innsbruck for the first time, most travelers don’t realize that there are great alternative places to stay outside the city. Active travelers with cars seeking affordable, or family-friendly accommodation ought to take a look at Mittelgebirgsterrasse Plateau, or Lans. We recommend Edenhauserhof, an organic dairy farm in Natters.

For a romantic mountainside getaway near Innsbruck, venture to Seefeld Plateau and stay in Nidum – Casual Luxury Hotel (luxury), or 5-star Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol (5-star luxury)

Below, we’re sharing our thoughts about where to stay in and around Innsbruck, depending on your priorities, travel style, and mode of transportation (with, or without a car).

We’ve personally stayed in the pedestrian zone of the Old Town (Altstadthotel Weisses Kreuz), neighboring Hall in Tirol (kontor Boutiquehotel), Tulfes (B&B Appartements Glungezer), Mutters, and Seefeld Plateau (Nidum – Casual Luxury Hotel).

Innsbruck City Center: Innenstadt

Pros

Ideal for sightseeing

Optimal location for visiting Christmas Markets

Best option for those traveling without a car

Many dining options

Bars and nightlife

Cons

Congested

It can be very hot in summer

Long journey to trailheads

Parking, when available, is always an extra charge

Breakfast is almost always an extra charge

The city center of Innsbruck roughly stretches from the train station to the Inn River. Most places of interest and architectural highlights are concentrated in the Altstadt (Old Town), including the Golden Roof, Hofburg Imperial Palace, Maria-Theresien-Straße, and Kaiserliche Hofkirche (Court Church).

Additionally, Innsbruck’s vibrant city center features an enticing array of restaurants, including Weisses Rössl Restaurant inside Weisses Rössl Hotel, Restaurant Lichtblick (Google Maps), Das Schindler (Google Maps), fine-dining Restaurant Oniriq (Google Maps), and Sitzwohl (Google Maps).

For drinks and cocktails, we recommend Brooks ODB (Google Maps), Blaue Brigitte inside Altstadthotel Weisses Kreuz, and Stage12 Bar inside STAGE 12 – Hotel by Penz

In summer, the Inntal basin can get very hot. Innsbruck is located at an elevation of 574 meters, which is very low. If you’re visiting between June and early September, only book accommodation with air-conditioning.

City Center Accommodations without Parking

We loved our stay at Altstadthotel Weisses Kreuz, because of its central location in the pedestrian area of Innsbruck’s Old Town, the professional check-in with a welcome drink, our beautifully-designed room with air conditioning, and the decadent breakfast (extra charge, but worth it). Though there is no on-site parking, they do have a partner garage nearby. Read our Altstadt Weisses Kreuz review.

Boutiquehotel Weisses Rössl is another excellent hotel in the pedestrian zone of the Altstadt with one of the best historic restaurants in Innsbruck. Rooms have air conditioning. Breakfast is included.

Steps away from the Inn Bridge, the 4-star Hotel Innsbruck offers an unbeatable location with air-conditioned rooms as well as excellent facilities like its extensive spa area and indoor pool, on-site restaurant, and hopping bar. Breakfast is included and public parking is available at a location nearby.

If you’re looking for an affordable and centrally-located accommodation outside of summer, check out H5 Grauer Bär Studios & More and Daxburg Apartments. In summer, opt for this lovely, budget-friendly Quartier 99 apartment with AC, located further away from the center (10-minute walk).

Housed above the Marktbar café facing the Inn River, Marketbar Studios is a stylish aparthotel with 14 air-conditioned design studios. On the other side of the river, you’ll find the lovely Faktorei boutique hotel, Das Grüne Haus boutique apartments, and the budget-friendly Montagu Hostel.

Next to the train station, Hotel Motel One Innsbruck is one of the best budget-midrange options in Innsbruck.

Advantageously located on Maria-Theresien Strasse, the 4-star STAGE 12 – Hotel by Penz offers stylish, air-conditioned rooms, a cocktail bar with an inviting terrace, fitness room, and spa with a sauna and steam bath (open between 4 pm and 9 pm). On-site parking available.

Standing on Adolf-Pichler-Platz, The PENZL Hotel is a modern design hotel, with one of the best breakfasts in town. Guests benefit from easy and convenient public parking, located directly below the hotel.

These accommodations require parking reservations: NALA individuellhotel (midrange), Faktorei (midrange-luxury), Hotel Zach (luxury).

Hungerburg

Goetheweg, Innsbruck, Austria

Pros

Trail access

Great views of the city

Direct and efficient transit connection to the city center

Cons

Limited accommodation options

Limited dining options

Many accommodations have a minimum stay requirement

The elevated area of Hungerburg is located northeast of the city center. It enjoys a direct transit connection to the city center via the Hungerburgbahn funicular. From Hungerburg, you can ride the Nordkettenbahnen cable ways to Seegrube and further to Hafelekarspitze.

The Hafelekarspitze mountain station is the starting point for both the Innsbruck Klettersteig and the gorgeous Goetheweg trail to Pfeishütte, as described in our Innsbruck hiking guide.

Without the use of cableways, you can also hike to many alpine pasture huts that overlook Innsbruck, including Arzler Alm, Bodensteinalm, Höttinger Alm, and Umbrüggler Alm. Be sure to check the opening hours, as many of these huts are closed on select days.

If you’re traveling to Innsbruck for sightseeing as well as hiking in the Karwendel mountains, consider staying here. This is suitable for travelers with and without a car.

Chalet Inn (apartments), Holidayhome OMYXL (apartments), Seehof Innsbruck (budget-friendly hotel), and Blickfang Apartment (2-bedroom vacation home) are all located close to the cable car and funicular stations.

Further away, you’ll find the well-reviewed Sweet Cherry – Boutique & Guesthouse Tyrol with an outdoor swimming pool, garden, and free parking.

These secluded cabins –  2 Chalets Innsbruck  – offer a peaceful getaway in a rustic setting surrounded by forest.

Lans

Pros

Excellent accommodations with on-site restaurants

Quick transit connection to Innsbruck

Great base for hiking and driving around

Relaxed and quiet countryside atmosphere

Dreamy mountain views

Great value for money

Free parking

Cons

There isn’t a lot to do in the village

Lans is a village with a population of 1097, at the foot of the Patscherkofel mountain.

Located on a plateau at an elevation of 867 meters, just 7 kilometers above Innsbruck, this idyllic destination enjoys sweeping views of the Nordkette chain.

Lans is an ideal base for travelers with cars, who are seeking a stress-free base outside the city center as well as a quick transit connection into Innsbruck. Bus line M connects Lans Sennerei with Innsbruck in 17 minutes.

If you stay in Lans, you can enjoy the Patscherkofel ski slopes in winter and the Stone Pine Trail and Lanser See in summer.

Lans is a 7-minute drive to Schloss Ambras and a 20-minute drive to Swarovski Crystal Worlds.

We recommend staying in 3-star Gasthof Isserwirt, a top-rated hotel in Lans with an exceptional and lovingly-prepared breakfast, spacious rooms, and an on-site restaurant

For even more comfort, we suggest staying in the 4-star Gasthof Walzl, a standout accommodation in Lans with a delicious on-site restaurant, complimentary sauna area and infinity pool, comfortable rooms, and friendly staff.

Mittelgebirgsterrasse Plateau

Pros

Affordable

Family-friendly accommodations

Traditional countryside atmosphere

Free Parking

Close to Axamer Lizum

Cons

Further away from Innsbruck City Center

Some accommodations have a minimum stay requirement

Very few accommodations have air conditioning

Mittelgebirgsterrasse is a sprawling plateau, or valley shoulder, above the Inntal, southwest of Innsbruck. Stretching between Wipptal Valley and Sellrain Valley, this elevated area runs at the foot of the Kalkkögel mountains at an elevation of 800-1000 meters.

There are a string of small villages atop Mittelgebirgsterrasse including Natters, Mutters, Birgitz, Götzens, and Axams. Traditional Tyrolean farm houses are the defining architecture of the area.

In winter, intermediate-advanced skiers can access the Axamer Lizum ski area. And in summer, hikers can hike to Nockspitze, Hochtennboden Plateau, and Salfeiner See.

Nockspitze-Saile Innsbruck Austria

This “mountain terrace” is ideal for travelers with cars who want to actively explore the Kalkkögel mountains and Sellraintal valley.

Take a look at Edenhauserhof, an organic dairy farm in Natters with beautiful rooms and apartments, and Alp Living Self Check-In Apartments, spacious pet-friendly holiday apartments in Götzens.

More accommodations | Hotel dasMEI**** (4-star hotel in Mutters), Hoarachhof (farm stay above Mutters), and Pittlanderhof (apartments in Mutters), Ferienparadies Natterer See (glamping at Lake Natterer See), Pension Singer (B&B), Hotel Kögele (3-star hotel in Axams), Appartement Seppi (budget-friendly apartments in Axams), and Die Wiesen Apartments (top-rated apartments in Axams).

Look for accommodation in Mutters.

Kühtai (for Skiing Only)

Pros

Ski-to-door accommodations

Cons

Small ski resort, only suitable for a short trip

Pricey

The Innsbruck Ski area is made-up of 12 small ski resorts, including Nordkette, Patsherkofel, Glugenzer, Axamer Lizum, Stubaier Gletcher, and Kühtai-Hochoetz.

The Kühtai-Hochoetz ski resort is located at 2000 meters, far higher than the other resorts in the area. For a snow-sure ski trip, consider staying in Kühtai.

There are a number of ski-to-door accommodations in Kühtai including Jagdschloss Resort Kühtai (rooms and chalets), AlpinLodges Kühtai (midrange apartments), and Hotel Mooshaus Winterresort (4-star hotel).

From Innsbruck, it’s a 40-minute bus ride on the free ski bus to Kühtai.

Hall in Tirol

Pros

Enchanting medieval Old Town

Nearby mountain biking routes, via ferrata routes, and hiking trails

Charming Christmas Market

Less touristy compared to Innsbruck

Cons

Limited accommodation options. kontor Boutiquehotel is the best choice

Boring after a few hours

In the middle ages, Hall in Tirol was an important trading town thanks to salt mining. Later, it was an important center for coin minting. The small medieval town center is a must-visit destination near Innsbruck.

kontor Boutiquehotel, Hall in Tirol, Austira
kontor Boutiquehotel

During advent (late November – late December), Hall hosts a very charming Christmas Market. We stayed one night in the lovely kontor Boutiquehotel in December to visit the market on our way home from skiing in Val Gardena.

For a vibrant atmosphere, Innsbruck is the better option. Hall in Tirol is sweet, but sedate.

Walderalm, Tyrol, Austria

If you visit Hall in summer, or early autumn, it’s worth driving up the toll road to Hinterhornalm. Hikers with via ferrata experience can summit Hundskopf. Everyone else can enjoy a leisurely stroll to the Walderalm alpine pasture hut. Mountain bikers can tackle the Walderalm – Ganalm circular route.

Look for accommodation in Hall in Tirol

Seefeld Plateau

Pros

Excellent cross country skiing destination in winter

Excellent hiking destination in summer and autumn

Exceptional mountainside hotels

Day trips to the Bavarian towns of Mittenwald and Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Cons

Seefeld is outside of Innsbruck, a 30-minute drive away, or 40-minute train ride

Seefeld in Tirol is a resort town between the Karwendel Mountains and the Wetterstein Mountains. It’s a famous cross-country skiing area.

In the town center, you’ll find many first-rate hotels like Hotel Klosterbräu & SPA, housed in a 16th-century monastery.

Nidum Casual Luxury Hotel Pool, Seefeld Plateau, Tyrol, Austria

However, for a peaceful mountainside retreat, we recommend staying on Seefeld Plateau, outside town. Take a look at Nidum – Casual Luxury Hotel (luxury / read our Nidum review) and 5-star Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol (5-star luxury).

If visiting in summer or autumn, hike the Rotmoosalm – Wangalm – Wettersteinhütte Circuit Trail.

Good to Know | The celebrated Karwendel High Trail starts just north of Seefeld.
