Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands of Spain. Europeans of all ages flock to this Mediterranean Island for the beaches, party scene, cycling routes, shoulder-season hiking, and the GR221 long-distance hiking trail.
Mallorca accommodates all types of travelers and vacationers. The key to having a great trip is to figure out where to stay.
Undoubtedly, the most beautiful places to stay in Mallorca are concentrated in the Tramuntana Mountains, which dominate the western flank of the island. If you want to stay in an idyllic mountain village, we recommend Sóller, Deià, or Valldemossa. If you’re seeking a seaside destination, ringed by mountains, we recommend the scenic towns of Port de Pollença and Port de Sóller.

Port de Pollença
Port de Pollença (Puerto Pollensa) is an attractive seaside town in Northern Mallorca on the Bay of Pollença.
Backed by the Tramuntana Mountains and Formentor peninsula, this laid-back, family-friendly town offers visitors a gorgeous setting to unwind, promenade, and relax by the sea.
Port de Pollença is a fantastic place to stay, because it affords easy access to both sandy beaches and rugged mountains.
It’s also positioned at the start/end of the Ma-10, a gorgeous mountain road which weaves through the Serra de Tramuntana.
If you’re building a road trip itinerary, we recommend making the Ma-10 the backbone of your route. From Palma de Mallorca, you can travel to Port de Pollença via the gorgeous mountain towns of Valldemossa, Deià, and Sóller along the Ma-10 road. Here’s an example itinerary:
- Arrive in Palma de Mallorca, Stay in Sant Elm, or Port d’Andratx (1-2 nights)
- Stay in Valldemossa, Sóller, or Port de Sóller (2-4 nights)
- Stay in Port de Pollença (2-4 nights)
Alternatively, you can travel to Port de Pollença from Palma de Mallorca via the direct Ma-13, which is only a 50 minute drive.
Things to Do around Port de Pollença
Cala Bóquer is a picturesque cove set at the end of Bóquer Valley. You can walk to this isolated cove directly from town, by following the Camí Boquer walking trail. The 5.6 km out-and-back walk takes 2 hours total. Read the full hiking description in our round-up of Best Hikes In Mallorca.
Formentor Peninsula is a narrow, mountainous peninsula famous for its magnificent viewpoints and hidden coves.
The Ma-2210 road connects Port de Pollença with Cap de Formentor. However, there are seasonal traffic restrictions in place during high season.
The hiking trails in Formentor are rugged and mostly not signed. The hike to Fumat and Cala en Gossalba are described in Mallorca Rother Walking Guide
- Viewpoints: Mirador Es Colomer (Google Maps) and Mirador del Racó d’en Tomàs (Google Maps)
- Coves: Cala Figuera, Cala en Gossalba, and Cala Murta
- Peaks: Fumat
The beautiful Alcúdia Peninsula separates the bays of Pollença and Alcúdia in North Mallorca. The historic town of Alcúdia is a worthy day trip from Port de Pollença, as it’s only a 20 minute drive away.
Before visiting the town, we highly recommend hiking this Talaia d’Alcúdia and Platja des Coll Baix Circuit Trail. Talaia d’Alcúdia is the highest point on the peninsula and Platja des Coll Baix is a gorgeous, secluded beach.

Year after year, Deià attracts high-profile artists, musicians, writers, and celebrities, searching for peace and quiet far away from gazing eyes and paparazzi.
With sea access, a plethora of great dining options, and hiking trails, Deià is a great place to stay in Mallorca.
During your visit, we recommend following the coastal trail from Cala Deià to Es Canyaret. After the walk, you can enjoy a scenic lunch at Ca’s Patro March, a rustic seafood restaurant perched above the rocky cove at Cala Deià.
From Deià, you can also hike to Valldemossa or Sóller along the GR 221 and return to the village by bus. If you hike to Sóller, eat freshly baked cakes at Finca Son Mico, a hilltop al fresco café.

Welcome extras include complimentary boat excursions in summer and a plentiful breakfast.
Valldemossa is a picture-perfect town in the central Tramuntana mountains in west Mallorca. Located in a fertile valley surrounded by terraced fields and olive tree groves, its appeal lies in its old-world charm and medieval townscape as well as its natural surroundings.
The town center is made up of stone buildings, accented with green-painted shutters, and narrow, cobbled streets lined with potted plants. Nearly every residence sports a colorful tile depicting the life of Santa Catalina Thomás (Catherine of Palma), the canonized saint born in Valldemossa in 1533.
Here’s our guide to visiting Valldemossa.
Most accommodations in the village center do not have on-site parking. Reach out to your accommodation in advance for parking instructions. Most supply guests with a free parking pass to a nearby car park.
Budget | Residencial Suites Valldemossa – Turismo de Interior are top-rated apartments in the center of Valldemossa, a stone’s throw from Pastisseria Ca’n Molinas (our favorite bakery). The host provides guests with a free parking pass.
Midrange | Ca’s Papà is a darling B&B in the heart of Valldemossa, just around the corner from Es Roquissar, La Posada Valldemossa, and many other restaurants. Luxury | Hotel Valldemossa is a stately hotel and gourmet restaurant in Valldemossa, with driving access and on-site parking. Guests enjoy sweeping views of the village and mountains from the hotel terrace, an outdoor swimming pool, and spa. It’s only a short walk to the village center from the hotel.
The southwest region of Mallorca is defined by scenic coves, lovely beaches, and the rolling foothills of the Tramuntana Mountains.
You’ll find a mix of beachside resorts (Paguera and Santa Ponsa), notorious party resorts (Magaluf and Palma Nova), charming seaside towns (Sant Elm and Port d’Andratx), and rural villages (Calvià, Galilea, Es Capdellà) in this area of Mallorca.
If you’re planning a Mallorca road trip, we recommend starting here and then continuing your journey to Valldemossa, Deià, and/or Sóller along the Ma-10 road.
Top attractions of the area include the Sant Elm fishing village, the La Trapa Ruins hike, Sa Dragonera Island, the beaches around Peguera (Platja Gran de Torà, Platja de La Romana), and of course the nightlife of Magaluf.
The rural town of Calvià is nestled in the foothills of Serra de Tramuntana, about 20 km west of Palma de Mallorca. Calvià’s appeal lies in its small historic town, countryside scenery (groves of carob and almond trees), central location, and tranquility.
Though only a short drive to the southwest coast and its many beach resorts, Calvià feels worlds away.
For rustic Mallorcan fare, eat at the traditional Mesón Ca´n Torrat. The weekly market of Calvià is held on Mondays, between 8 am and 1 pm, in the center of town along the Calle Major.
Budget – Midrange | Fincahotel Can Estades is a romantic B&B set in a historic 16th century building, which was renovated with great care. Surrounded by serene countryside, this gorgeous estate is an ideal base for slowing down as well as actively exploring the southwest of Mallorca.
Fincahotel Can Estades features an outdoor swimming pool, jacuzzi, courtyard, and library. The Finca is managed by German expats who speak multiple languages and are extremely helpful in making dinner reservations and recommending things to see and do in the area. Live music concerts are held outside once a month, between March and October.
Es Capdellà Accommodations
Luxury | Housed in a restored castle in the countryside, Castell Son Claret – The Leading Hotels of the World is the ultimate romantic escape. It exudes elegance and sophistication with its uniquely-designed rooms, luxurious facilities (two swimming pools, gym, yoga room), gorgeous grounds, and cocktail bar. Breakfast included.
Sant Elm Accommodations
Budget | Hostal Dragonera is a seafront B&B with incredible views. Stay here for the unbeatable price and the ideal location. Rooms are small, but clean.
